I attended the1960 Jambo as a scout. Two nights on the train with a stop between trains in Chicago (quite a trip for someone who hadn't been more than 100 miles from Western Maryland before). The 2010 Jambo is my first year as staff (Chartered Org Exhibits). I did attend 2005 as a visitor.

As a new Eagle Scout I attended the '64 Jambo at Valley Forge as a JASM. I don't remember how many nights we rode that train from DeRidder, LA to St. Louis and then over to Penn Station. I can tell you that I learned to sleep sitting up and can do that to this day. I can also tell you the train ride back isn't any shorter.
A few years later in 2001 I arrived at AP Hill as a Merit Badge Midway Commissioner. It was there I learned what "Don't Kill the Messenger" really means.
Both Jambos were full of good and bad experiences I'll never forget. Every Scout and Scouter should attend, at least one.

I have been fortunate to have staffed 5 National Jamborees (and 2 World Jamborees). My first National was in 1981 as a sub-camp youth staff member. In 1985 I helped promote Exploring in the National Exhibits area. For the 1993, 1997, and 2001 Jambos, I helped out in the Conservation area and promoted the Hornaday award for service to conservation. The Jamboree in 1989 I was not able to attend due to thesis work on my Master's Degree at Texas A&M (Geology). However, I did make collection sets of rocks and minerals to be given to scouts as a gift for completing the Geology Merit Badge at the Jamboree.
Permalink Reply by Al Lundy on August 9, 2011 at 11:39am I visited the 1977 National Jamboree at 'More-Rain' State Park in Pennsyvania, on the day of the big rain. I also visited the 1981 National Jamboree the first year it was at A.P. Hill, and the 1983 World Scout Jamboree in Calgary, Canada.
I was the 1st Assistant Scoutmaster for a council contigent troop in 1985, and served on national staff for the Daily Stage Shows at both 2005 and 2010.
