The fact that its 6 hours closer to home.

Hard to tell. There are a number of people that still don't think it will be held at Bechtel. If it is the site will be pretty primitive and undeveloped. It will also depend on what aspects of the site will be open for Jamboree participants.

If BSA attempts to limit potential injuries like they did with BMX bikes, the scouts won't be able to take advantage of the rock climbing nor the white water.

I will enjoy the potential for cooler temps and moderate humidity.

It is my understanding that that there will be White Water for the more senior scouts in the neighboring National Park.

I too have reservations as to wether the Jamboree will really occur at the Summit and if it does will it be as good as it should be? Be that as it may, I will be excited about being part of something new and hopefully able to put together a program for boating that will be fun, safe and new. I don't see whitewater ever being a part of it since it takes trained and certified personell aside from the fact that it would be an almost all day event don't you think? I would think that would be best left for the high adventure part of the program and not Jamboree.

I love the mountains and camping so whatever we need to do to make it happen as long as we can be proud of it I will hopefully be a part of.........

I also have reservations regarding activities for the 2013 Jamboree at the Summit. HOWEVER, being a veteran of several Canadian National Jamborees, I think it can be done and with adequate safety. The Canadians have scoutcraft and high adventure activities that are separated by age group (ie. scouts and ventures) All day events are OK as long as the units have planned for the days' activities. It should pose no problem as long as staff is trained and we put safety first. Rock climbing, mountain biking, and water sports can all be handled if it's well planned and proper precautions are taken.

John Burkitt says:

Too many things in day-to-day scouting are toned down by insurance regulations in the face of today's litigacious environment. My scouts will never stand on a 30-foot-tall signal tower made of logs and ropes. I think they should pull out all the stops to MAKE some of the higher adventure activities safe enough so that the once-in-a-lifetime nature of a National Jamboree is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They can achieve levels of safety and vigilance at an NJ that they can't ordinarily afford at camporees or Summer Camp, and that's what they ought to do.

Amy Essex says:

I agree- once-in-a- lifetime is just that.... it can be done to make it safe enough for most everyone to try if they want to... bear in mind, some disabled scouts/scouters may or may not always be able to participate.... in one way or another, we ALL have limitations to some degree, whether physical or mental or whatever... I personally work with disabled kids and adults on a daily basis... sometimes they truly amaze me by what they are Not limited to do if only given the chance.... sure, the activity has to be reconfigured for safety, but it can happen and everyone can have fun still.... just a lot more to think about and be prepared for..... isn't that Boy Scouts is all about? Having Fun and being prepared !

Not to mention... this project could potentially be the icing on the cake to bring kids/adults into or back into scouting.... it all depends on the approach and not let the actual "business of scouting" hamper their efforts to up their membership... the whole idea is to appeal to that one little bit of curiosity and to somehow retain that curiosity for a lifetime- personally, I was never in scouting while growing up- even though I was a tomboy. Since I ended up with three boys- now 17 (life)- started as a wolf, 15 (life)-started as a tiger cub, and 12 (first class)- started helping his brothers deliver popcorn when he was 3, I have had more fun, met more genuine friends that I communicate with on a regular basis (even across the world), and tried things that I would have otherwise never tried in a lifetime (my kids too). I am even pursuing a certification in Environmental Education as a result of a great Scout mentor that I love as much as my own mother.... Scouting is a family affair that last through generations of families.... hope Bechtal can keep up the tradition and adapt to the 21st Century and beyond... I would hate to see if my own kids couldn't continue the family tradition.... think with your heart and your mind... not your pocketbook and keep God and Family First for this new endeavor Thanks BSA!

Ms Jones says:

When you think , though, of the initial costs to put this area into use; will those costs somehow be passed on to the next participants of the jambo? It's got to stay down in cost; for most people to travel to this more remote area of the country, travel costs will always add on to the national price; so I do think that the crew figuring out this jamboree at Bechtel, ought to include new types of activities as you suggest here; while doing all in their means, to keep the pricetag to $995 still; even if that means, less of the "frills" that the past jamborees have become used to providing(maybe no buses; make the whole area small enough to just walk!!)...I'll think of more things as time goes on; just that as I tried to sell this past jambo to scouts and leaders and families; the cost and the associated "tack on costs" just proved to be difficult to sell...

Ms Jones says:

The natural beauty of being in such a location; vs being on an Army base, will be refreshing...not that I didn't like taking walks up north at Fort AP Hill, to the lakes; that was the prettiest part of the jambo itself...

The smaller footprint; for the actual jamboree activities and the living space, will be an asset also...

The whitewater; the opportunities for doing more outdoor scouting like activities, will be a "draw" to this new site, I would think...
I will like the compact site. Eliminating a lot of the walking and allowing the scouts time to do will be terrific. The rest I will reserve judgement on until I get down for Summit Corp and see the promo material next year for 2013!
Hooray fo topography!
Also I am very excited about the higher overall adventure level of activities.

Whoever thought of eliminating the MB midway and incorporating the merit badge activities into the related activity area deserves a medal.

I also think the use of villages rather than camping by region is long overdue.

I hope to be there to see it all in person.
